High school students from around the state learn about pork production and compete for two $500 college scholarships.
Columbia, Mo.,—Are you interested in the future of pork production, new technologies, or want to be a leader in the pork industry and are still in high school? If so, apply for the 2009 University of Missouri Pork Institute.
The Pork Institute will be held June 8-10 on the MU campus. The registration fee of $100 covers materials, meals, dormitory lodging (air-conditioned, Virginia Avenue dormitory) and planned field trips. Participants are responsible for travel costs to and from Columbia.
Space is limited to 15 students, and all high school students are encouraged to apply. A selection committee of university faculty and leaders in the pork industry will screen the applicants. The applications must be postmarked by May 1. Results of the selection process will be announced May 8, 2009.
Some of the planned activities include: a tour of the Triumph Foods Processing Plant in St. Joseph, a tour of the MU College of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostics Lab, and a live animal ultrasound. Attendees will also tour a shower in-shower out sow facility. At the end of the Institute, participants will take a written exam. The top two highest-scoring individuals will each earn a $500 scholarship to the University of Missouri-Columbia.
