Ten chefs cook up culinary delights centered around The Other White Meat.
Columbia, Mo., - Chef Kevin Storm, of Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, garnered top honors with his Peking Style Pork at the Taste of Elegance culinary competition held November 5 at the Marriott St. Louis Airport. His winning entrée earned him the $1,000 prize and an invitation to compete in the national 2008 Taste of Elegance competition. Chef Storm has won the St. Louis event three years in a row.
The event was sponsored by the Missouri Pork Association, the Illinois Pork Producers Association, Cargill Meat Solutions, Missouri Wine and Grape Board, Marriott-St. Louis Airport and Osage Marketing, Inc. The event was also promoted by the St. Louis Area Foodbank. Ten chefs competed in the competition, with all pork used being donated by Cargill’s White Marble Farms brand. The Missouri Wine and Grape Board provided wine selections from Missouri wineries. The entrées were judged on originality, taste and presentation.
Chef Chris Stroup of the Renaissance Hotel in St. Louis received second place and the People’s Choice award with his entrée, Molasses Brined Pork Chop with Missouri Apple Cider Reduction, Sweet Potato Pave and Glazed Autumn Vegetables. Chef Shun Ammons from Harry’s Restaurant and Bar in St. Louis prepared the third place entrée of Pork Trio.
Chef Storm will advance to the national Taste of Elegance in California, which has been sponsored by the National Pork Board since 1987.
“We are proud to sponsor the Taste of Elegance,” said Jim Fisher, vice-chairman of the Missouri Pork Association. “The ability to work with chefs in creating new pork menu items helps build demand for pork, while introducing consumers to its great taste.”
The Missouri Pork Association represents the state’s pork producers in the areas of promotion, research, education and legislation.
