Missouri Pork Association's Press Release

"Creating Opportunities For Our Industry Since 1954"

2007 Swine Institute

Evaluating today’s challenges to ensure tomorrow’s future

The 2007 Swine Institute will be held November 6 and 7, 2007 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 3301 LeMone Industrial Blvd, Columbia, MO 65201. This year’s Swine Institute is sponsored by University of Missouri Extension Commercial Agriculture Program, Missouri Pork Association, Missouri Corn Growers, and FCS Financial.

The 2007 Swine Institute will address issues challenging the Missouri swine industry from both within and outside the swine production industry. Here are a few highlights of this year’s swine institute. Circo Virus has been a disease affecting productively and mortality. The effects on the swine industry will be examined if an effective Circo Virus Vaccine can be implemented. Ethanol production impacts are appearing all across the US economy. The impacts of ethanol production on both the swine industry and consumers will be examined. A tool will be presented to help evaluate how to effectively use DDGS from ethanol production in swine diets. The potential for reduced use of gestation crates has received considerable attention the last couple of years. What options and challenges exist to potentially reduce the use of crates at the farm level will be discussed.

Feature speakers for the 2007 Swine Institute will include Don Levis from University of Nebraska and Brian Buhr from University of Minnesota and former University of Missouri swine focus team members Dennis DePietre and Rick Tubbs.
