Missouri’s Pork Producers Support Efforts to Protect West Quincy from Flooding

On Sunday, June 15, Missouri’s pork producers traveled to West Quincy in support of those protecting homes and farms from the possibility of flooding. Diane Slater with the Missouri Pork Association made the trip from Columbia with cookies, chips and pork burgers for 200. Thanks to Woods Smoked Meats in Bowling Green for donating the pork burgers.

A big thanks also goes out to Scott Hays and his family (a pork producer from Monroe City), Abby Maher (Monroe City, 2008 MPA Youth Pork Ambassador), and Jay and Michele Collins and family (pork producers from Lentner). Together, we grilled and wrapped over 320 sandwiches that day. (We also grilled over 100 hamburgers, donated by Jesse Heimer from Taylor.)

Missouri Pork Association Hosts Youth Pork Institute

Scholarships up for grabs at three-day “Pig Camp.” Columbia – Missouri’s high school students are invited to spend three days in Columbia at a University of Missouri and Missouri Pork Association-sponsored “Pig Camp” June 14-16. At the end of the three days, two lucky students will receive a $500 scholarship. A maximum of 15 students will be selected to attend the Youth Pork Institute, where the students are introduced to all aspects of modern pork production. Attendees must be current high school students and a pork background is not a necessary requirement. Tuition for the Institute is $75 per student, which includes lodging, meals, materials and field trips. Students will evaluate live hogs and learn about feed management. On Tuesday, June 15, the students tour the Excel processing plant, the Kent feed mill and visit the MFA swine complex, all in Marshall. Carcass evaluation, pork quality and manure management take stage the final day of camp, as well as an artificial insemination demonstration. The students also tour the University Veterinary Medicine Diagnostics Laboratory. At the completion of the Institute, attendees take a test over the proceedings. The top two scores earn scholarships worth $500 sponsored by the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources to be used when the student enrolls in the College. Applications for the 2004 Youth Pork Institute are due May 10. The applications are available through all high school agriculture instructors, at University extension offices or by contacting the Missouri Pork Association at (573) 445-8375. Missouri’s Pork Producers Urged to Contact
Their Congressmen Regarding COOL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Missouri’s pork producers are encouraged to contact their congressmen regarding country-of-origin labeling (COOL) and ask for a voluntary rather than a mandatory program,” says Phil Howerton, Chairman of the Board of the Missouri Pork Association. The Missouri Pork Association opposes COOL because the additional costs of implementing the program far outweigh any benefit to pork producers.

The mandatory country-of-origin labeling was written into the 2002 farm bill and ultimately requires that pork producers collect, maintain, track, audit and verify information related to the origin of livestock for the purpose of labeling pork products in retail meat cases.

An economic analysis of the mandatory country-of-origin labeling program, performed by economists for the U.S. pork industry and Iowa State University, concludes the estimated costs for pork producers of implementing a full traceback system associated with country-of-origin labeling could cost up to $10.22 per hog.

“To comply with the new law, most of Missouri’s pork producers will have to implement an extensive and costly record keeping system and that’s the last thing we need,” says Howerton.

By making COOL mandatory, processors and retailers, faced with $10,000 per day per violation penalties, are already moving to require a costly animal identification and traceback systems to protect themselves from mislabeled products. This in turn will cause higher priced pork products and shy consumers away from purchasing pork.

“Unfortunately, making COOL mandatory will have numerous negative effects on the pork industry,” says Howerton. “Not only will it will add additional on-farm production costs, reduce U.S. exports globally, and decrease domestic pork consumption but it will drive consolidation and vertical integration.” It creates a situation where vertically integrated systems in both cattle and swine can provide all the product needed for certain markets or retail systems. This would shut family livestock producers out of these markets and force them to sell into the food service segment at a discounted price”.

Missouri’s pork producers are strongly urged to contact their U.S. congressmen and senators and ask them to keep the country-of-origin labeling program voluntary rather than mandatory. “If Missouri’s pork producers speak up and express their concerns with COOL now, they can help eliminate added regulatory costs in the future. Put simply, we don’t need another unfunded government mandate!” says Howerton.

Oklahoma Governor signs Eco-Terrorism Protection Act to protect farms

Despite the expected opposition from environmental and animal rights extremists groups, Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry signed a Senate bill Thursday that targets "eco-terrorists,” The measure, introduced by Sen. Bruce Price, D- Hinton, makes entering a site where animals are kept and "disrupting" operations a felony. Punishment includes jail time and up to a $10,000 fine. The bill passed with overwhelming support in both the House and the Senate. "The measure passed legal muster," said Paul Sund, spokesman for Henry's office. "The governor believes the legislation strikes a good balance between commerce and environmental issues." Rep. James Covey, D-Custer City, House author, said the bill is a preventative measure to head off actions by radical animal rights groups. "Then, if something happens, at least there is some teeth in the law," Covey said.
